Angie Roos's Story: A Journey of Dedication and Passion
As we kick off this week with a public holiday, let's draw inspiration from Angie Roos, a young female athlete from the Vaal. From cross-country at a young age to bodybuilding, to USN Fitness Model, and back to running, Angie's journey is a testament to her dedication and passion.
Angie's passion for running began when she participated in cross-country and middle distances at a young age. With parents who were also runners, Angie was naturally drawn to the sport. After a brief break to focus on bodybuilding, Angie rediscovered her love for running during lockdown.
Discovering Parkrun
Angie discovered parkrun through her mother-in-law, who introduced her to this wonderful community. Angie's first parkrun was at Heron Banks on 17 August 2019, and she has since fallen in love with the sport, completing 52 parkruns and exploring nine different venues across South Africa.
The Power of Community
What Angie loves most about parkrun is the sense of community. It's welcoming, supportive, and full of positive energy. The atmosphere is electric, and the camaraderie is noticeable. Whether you're a seasoned runner or a newcomer, a parkrun event is a space where you can thrive and grow.
Practical Life Lessons from Angie's Journey
Runners can learn the following valuable lessons from Angie's journey:
- Discipline: Sticking to a training plan and schedule.
- Planning: Setting realistic goals and preparing for challenges.
- Perseverance: Overcoming obstacles and staying motivated.
As Angie believes, motivation isn't enough; you need to stick to your plan, even when it's tough. Volunteering at parkrun has also taught Angie the value of giving back to the community.
Advice for Aspiring Runners
Angie's advice is simple: Just Do It! You don't have to be fast or run long distances to be a runner. Walking is okay, and it's not a competition except against yourself. As Nelson Mandela said, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."
Achievements and Personal Bests
Angie has achieved remarkable results, including completing the Two Oceans Half Marathon and her first full marathon. Her personal bests include:
- 5 km: 00:23:22
- 10 km: 00:49:14
- 21.1 km: 01:49:03
- 42.2 km: 04:32:56
Sponsorship and Support
Angie is proud to be sponsored by USN for the past 5 years, supporting her endeavors in both bodybuilding and running. She is also sponsored by REVIVE. As a proud brand ambassador, Angie believes in the importance of quality nutrition, supplements, and hydration to fuel her passion for fitness and athletics.
Affiliation and Representation
Angie is also a proud member of ACTOM Athletics Club and represents the club in various races, further solidifying her commitment to the sport and her community.
Conclusion
Angie's story is an inspiration, reminding us that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. If you're curious about parkrun, come along and experience it for yourself every Saturday morning at 08H00. For more information about a parkrun near you in the Vaal, click here:

You don't need to be a runner to feel the magic. Just show up and be part of something wonderful. As Angie would say, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
Thought for the Week
Every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory in the journey towards your greatest self.
Have a great and blessed week!

*A Tribute to Uncle George Van Jaarsveld*
Meet *Uncle George Van Jaarsveld,* a humble and inspiring individual who has left an indelible mark on the parkrun community and the Vaal area. As we celebrate his remarkable contributions, we also honor his life journey, which offers valuable lessons for us all.
*A Life of Modesty and Achievement*
Uncle George's accomplishments are impressive, yet he prefers to downplay them. He has won the SA Masters orienteering championships and participated in numerous national and international orienteering and adventure racing events with his wife. However, he believes that boasting about personal achievements is unnecessary and that true fulfillment comes from adding value to others' lives.
*Overcoming Ego and Finding Purpose*
Uncle George's story teaches us that true happiness and purpose come from serving others. As the great poet Maya Angelou once said, _"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."_ Uncle George's experiences have shown him that everyone has something unique to offer and that by focusing on others, we can find true fulfillment.
*The Power of Volunteering and Community*
Uncle George's involvement with parkrun has been instrumental in shaping his outlook on life. As the pioneer who started the parkrun family in Vaal, he introduced the community to the joys of parkrun. He believes that volunteering at parkrun has helped him connect with others, build meaningful relationships, and find a sense of belonging. His article, *"Inspiring the Elderly,"* which was published twice by parkrun in the past, highlights the transformative impact of parkrun on seniors, who often feel isolated and invisible.
*Inspiring the Elderly*
"Elderly people become invisible in society. We work for forty years or more. Some of us are married even longer. Our friends and family of years standing have passed away or have moved on. We find ourselves isolated in alone-ness. But volunteering at a parkrun changes all that. When marshalling and saying to each and everyone passing you "Almost there" or "Thank you for being here" or "Please come again" and even "Hey doggie, you are going to beat your mommy" makes a huge difference to people, but their response in return is unbelievable!
They in turn thank you for what you are doing for them and they help to create a warm and friendly feeling for everyone.
That in turn evolves into the feedback of a friendly family orientated parkrun venue and officials.
As an elderly person, to see the pre-teens working hard to stay with a parent, or a doggie straining at the leash, or even better, the bulk of the people, not so young anymore and not very fit, being there and doing something for themselves and then thanking you for what you are doing for them - now that is most inspiring.
Now one knows, you are something, and you added value to someone else's life....
_YOU ARE NOT INVISIBLE ANYMORE!"_ Written by Uncle George Van Jaarsveld
*Lessons from Uncle George's Life*
1. *Modesty is key:* Uncle George's story reminds us that true fulfillment comes from serving others, not from boasting about personal achievements.
2. *Focus on others:* By focusing on adding value to others' lives, we can find true purpose and happiness.
3. *Volunteering is powerful:* Uncle George's experience with parkrun demonstrates the transformative impact of volunteering on individuals and communities.
4. *Community is essential:* Building meaningful relationships and connections with others is vital for our well-being and sense of belonging.
A Special Tribute on a Milestone Birthday
As Sasolburg Stadium parkrun prepares to celebrate its 3rd Birthday, we are delighted to share this tribute to Uncle George. Sasolburg Stadium parkrun was his last parkrun endeavor before retirement, making this tribute even more special.
Tribute to Uncle George
As we celebrate Uncle George's contributions to parkrun and the Vaal community, we honor his remarkable life journey and the lessons he has shared with us. His modesty, kindness, and dedication to serving others are an inspiration to us all. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, _"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."_ Thank you, Uncle George, for being an example of the power of modesty, volunteering, and community. Your legacy will continue to inspire and motivate us to make a positive impact in our communities every time someone runs around "Uncle George's Loop."
Have a great week, and if you have never volunteered, please consider! You might just like it and experience a new sense of fulfillment.
Best regards,

The Power of Parkrun: Boet Beukes' Inspiring Story
What We Can Learn from One Man's Passion for Running and Community
Meet Boet Beukes, a passionate parkrunner who has embarked on an incredible journey of self-discovery, perseverance, and community building. With 357 parkruns under his belt and a staggering 185 different events participated in across South Africa, Boet's story is a testament to the power of dedication and the parkrun spirit.
Boet's running journey began in 1997 when he was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Determined to take control of his health, he started training by jogging around the block. His first official race was the Sasolburg Athletic Club (SAC) Ladies race in November 1997.
"Believe You Can and You're Halfway There." - Theodore Roosevelt
Over the years, Boet has participated in numerous races, including track athletics, where he won several gold medals. He has also completed approximately 60 marathons, including the prestigious Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons. Boet's personal best times include:
- 5km: 26:38
- 10km: 44:39
- 21.1km: 01:43:05
- 42km: 03:30:00
- Two Oceans: 06:20
- Comrades: 10:08
Boet's greatest moment in running came during the 2000 Comrades marathon, where he finished just after the famous rugby commentator, John van Rensburg, and Springbok Uli Schmidt.
Despite facing setbacks, including a knee injury in 2013 that forced him to stop running, Boet's passion for the sport never wavered. He discovered parkrun in 2016 and has since become a parkrun stalwart, participating in events across South Africa and volunteering at four different venues.
Boet's advice to those who want to start running and participating in parkrun is simple: "Don't think that everyone who runs (walks parkrun) is an athlete. Most of us are not 'born' runners – most are 'self-made'. 'I can never finish 5km' is a myth. If Boet Beukes can do it, so can you!"
*Practical Life-Lessons from Boet's Journey:*
*1. Community is Key*
Boet's experience highlights the importance of community in our lives. Surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals who share our passions and values can be a powerful motivator and source of support.
*2. Volunteering is a Game-Changer*

*3. Celebrate Milestones and Progress*
Boet's achievement of 357 parkruns is a remarkable milestone. His story encourages us to celebrate our progress, no matter how small, and to recognize the efforts we put into our passions.
*4. Perseverance Pays Off*
Boet's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance. Despite setbacks, injuries, and challenges, he's continued to push himself, always striving to be better.
*5. Running is a Journey, Not a Destination*
Boet's story reminds us that running is a journey, not a destination. It's about the people we meet, the experiences we have, and the lessons we learn along the way.
*6. Self-Made Success*
Boet's story shows us that success is not solely dependent on natural ability. With hard work, determination, and perseverance, anyone can achieve their goals.
*7. Overcoming Adversity*
Boet's experience teaches us that setbacks are a natural part of the journey. It's how we respond to them that matters. By facing his challenges head-on, Boet was able to overcome them and continue pursuing his passion.
*8. The Power of Passion*
Boet's love for running is evident in everything he does. His story shows us that when we're passionate about something, we're more likely to stick with it and achieve our goals.

Rising Above Adversity: Rozaan Steyn's Journey with MS
Meet Rozaan Steyn, a 39-year-old woman from Sasolburg, South Africa, who's redefining what it means to live with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Diagnosed on her birthday, June 5, 2020, Rozaan's journey is a testament to her unwavering faith, resilience, and determination.
From Taebo to MS Hope
Before her diagnosis, Rozaan enjoyed an active lifestyle, participating in Taebo classes and parkruns with friends. She even graduated from Taebo, proving that fitness and fun can go hand-in-hand. Little did she know that her life was about to take a dramatic turn.
The Diagnosis and the Turning Point
Rozaan's diagnosis with MS shook her to the core. Confused, scared, and overwhelmed, she wrestled with her faith, asking, "Why me, Lord?" But in that moment of darkness, a song echoed in her mind: "Go then My child, and do what I ask you to do." Her mother's words of encouragement, "Fiela, isn't this what Jesus wants you to do for Him?" became a beacon of hope.

Rozaan has since participated in the Sasol Marathon every year, and in June 2024, she completed the Polar Bear Swim in Aldam with fellow MS Warrior Gerrie Hadders.

Unlocking Your Potential: The Power of Resilience and Community
As we continue on our fitness journey, it's essential to remember that every step forward, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction. This week, we're inspired by the story of *Wynand Myburgh,* a dedicated and inspiring member of the Sasolburg Stadium parkrun. His journey is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity, and we're excited to share his story with you.
The Power of Resilience
Despite being deaf, Wynand has shown unwavering commitment, dedication, and resilience, proving that with determination and hard work, anything is possible. His journey is a reminder that we all have the power to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals, no matter what challenges we may face.
The Importance of Community
As we reflect on Wynand's story, we're reminded of the importance of community and the impact that positive relationships can have on our lives. Surrounding ourselves with supportive and encouraging individuals can help us to stay motivated and focused on our goals. The parkrun group has become a source of support and encouragement for Wynand, demonstrating the significance of community in our lives.
Life-Lessons from Wynand's Journey
Wynand's story teaches us valuable lessons about the power of resilience, community, and determination. _Here are three key lessons:_
1. The Power of Resilience: Wynand's journey is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity. Despite facing challenges, he has persevered and continued to push himself to new heights.
2. The Importance of Community: The parkrun community has become a source of support and encouragement for Wynand, demonstrating the significance of community in our lives.
3. Determination and Hard Work: Wynand's consistency and his commitment to volunteering are examples of commitment, determination, and hard work.
Inspiration from Wynand's Story
Wynand's story is a powerful reminder that we all have the potential to achieve great things in our own unique way. Here are three ways his story can inspire us:
1. You Are Never Too Old to Start: Wynand's journey is a reminder that it's never too late to start a new fitness journey or pursue a new hobby. With the right support and encouragement, anyone can achieve their goals.
2. The Power of Positive Relationships: Wynand's story demonstrates the impact that positive relationships can have on our lives. Surrounding ourselves with supportive and encouraging individuals can help us to stay motivated and focused on our goals.
3. Celebrating Milestones: Wynand's 100th parkrun is a significant milestone, and his celebration is a reminder to acknowledge and appreciate our achievements, no matter how big or small they may seem.
Wynand Myburgh's parkrun Story
Wynand's parkrun journey started when he first heard about parkrun from Johanna at the Sasolburg Stadium office, where he would often go for safety reasons and to walk with his dog. On January 21, 2023, Wynand decided to give parkrun a try and went to the Sasolburg Stadium parkrun. He didn't know how to join, but Eugenie Coetzer told him about the 5km walk, and soon he was hooked.
Since then, Wynand has completed 100 parkruns, and he's proud to say that he's never looked back. He's done parkruns in various locations, including Meyerton, Rivera Vaal, and Egweni River Lodge. He's also joined the *Rondlopers* group and has done parkruns with them in Welkom, Botanical Garden, Serengeti Estate Delta, Rainhill Farm, and Pine Forest.
What Wynand loves most about parkrun is the sense of community and the opportunity to connect with nature. As a deaf person, he can't hear the sounds of nature, but his walking friends always share the wonder with him. He also appreciates the chance to share his worries with God and leave the outcome to Him.
Wynand has also had the opportunity to volunteer at parkruns, which he thoroughly enjoys. His favorite role is as a Park Walker, where he can support children and older people who need assistance. He finds it incredibly rewarding to form bonds of friendship with them and help them complete their parkruns.
If someone is nervous about coming to parkrun, Wynand would say, "Don't be! It's a welcoming and supportive community, and everyone is there to encourage and motivate each other." He's even invited his two aunts to join him, and they've really enjoyed it (although they were a bit exhausted afterwards!).
As Wynand continues to push himself to new heights, his next milestone is to complete 100 parkruns at Sasolburg Stadium parkrun, and he is eagerly approaching this with 81 parkruns already under his belt. In addition to his impressive parkrun achievements, Wynand has also demonstrated his commitment to giving back to the parkrun community, having volunteered an impressive 78 times, with the majority of those times spent in the role of Park Walker. With his sights set on volunteering 100 times at parkrun events, Wynand is a shining example of dedication and perseverance.
But Wynand won't be celebrating alone - his loyal walking buddy, Muffin, a lovable Yorkie who has become like a sister to him, will be right by his side. Together, they will mark the occasion of Wynand's 100th local parkrun with a special parkrun, a heartwarming tribute to the unbreakable bond between Wynand and his faithful furry companion.
As we reflect on Wynand's inspiring journey, we are reminded that with resilience and determination, anything is possible. May his story inspire you to pursue your own dreams, push beyond your limits, and never give up on your goals. Congratulations, Wynand, on your remarkable achievements - we can't wait to see what the future holds for you!

The Power of Volunteering...
Transforming Lives and Building a Stronger Community
As we kick off a brand new week, we're reminded of the incredible impact we can have on our community when we come together to make a difference. The Event Director at Sasolburg Stadium parkrun perfectly captures this sentiment, "At parkrun, we're proud to have a vibrant community of volunteers who are the backbone of our events, making every single one not only possible, but truly unforgettable!"
Why Volunteer?
By volunteering, you become part of a collective effort that brings people together and creates a sense of belonging. You'll get to connect with like-minded individuals, make new friends, and be part of a community that shares a passion for making a positive impact. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to develop new skills, gain experience, and enhance your career prospects.
As Mahatma Gandhi once said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." We couldn't agree more! Volunteering is not only about giving back to the community but also about personal growth and self-discovery.
Seven Powerful Reasons to Volunteer:
1. Build a stronger community: Volunteering helps create a sense of community and connection among people.
2. Make a difference: Even small tasks can have a significant impact on the lives of others.
3. Connect with others: Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and build relationships.
4. Gain new skills: You'll have the opportunity to develop new skills and gain experience in various roles.
5. Improve your mental and physical health: Volunteering can have a positive impact on your mental and physical well-being.
6. Enhance your career prospects: Volunteering can provide valuable experience and skills that can be applied to your career.
7. Feel a sense of purpose: Volunteering can give you a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Where Can You Volunteer?
The opportunities are endless! You can volunteer at:
- Local running clubs, like ours, to help with events and activities
- Community Initiatives, such as food banks, animal shelters, or environmental projects
- Your church or place of worship to help with outreach programs or community events
- parkrun events to help with tasks such as timekeeping, scanning, marshaling, token sorting, or to help set up and close down.
The Impact of Volunteering
In South Africa, an impressive 60,000 plus people from diverse communities have volunteered at parkrun events across the country since 2014. This remarkable effort has contributed to a major milestone: surpassing ONE MILLION total participants in 2024. However, the impact of volunteering extends far beyond parkrun. By giving your time and energy to various causes, you can make a significant impact on the lives of others and create a ripple effect of kindness and compassion.
The Benefits of Volunteering
Volunteering can have a significant impact on your emotional, social, relational, and mental well-being. Some of the benefits include:
- Improved mood
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Increased self-esteem
- Improved social skills
- Reduced isolation
- Sense of purpose
- Improved physical health
What parkrun Participants Say about the Volunteers
There are some amazing feedback from parkrun participants and visitors, including:
- "Well organized events by volunteers"
- "Friendly volunteers"
- "Passionate and enthusiastic volunteer team"
- "Thank you for the volunteers who made us feel welcome!"
What Volunteers Say about Volunteering at a parkrun
Some volunteers have also shared their experiences with us, saying
- "It is great to help make a difference in our community by helping people from our community and visitors to have a great and memorable experience."
- "To volunteer creates a sense of belonging."
- "To give me a fix and the knowing I have served others and was part of an amazing parkrun event."
- "It is amazing to be acknowledged by parkrun to receive parkrun Volunteer Milestone Credits."
- "It has helped me to interact more with people and to step out of my comfort zone."
Please Take Note!
Just keep in mind that for you to have a great experience at any of the 220+ parkruns in South Africa, someone else gave up their run to volunteer, making it possible for you to have a great experience. Everything that involves hosting a weekly parkrun is 100%, depending on the time, resources, and talents of loyal volunteers!
A Call to Action
We encourage all parkrunners to consider volunteering at least 10% of the total parkruns they have already completed. By doing so, you'll not only be giving back to your community, but you'll also be contributing to the success of our events and making a positive impact on the lives of others.

_The Power of Resilience: Celebrating the Unbreakable Spirit of Fitness Heroes_
As we continue to navigate the ups and downs of life, it's essential to recognize the importance of resilience in overcoming challenges and achieving our goals. Last week, I shared with you my personal experience of falling and injuring myself, and how it made me appreciate the daily struggles that many people face. This week, I want to dive deeper into the concept of resilience and celebrate the unbreakable spirit of fitness heroes who inspire us with their courage and determination.
Resilience is the ability to withstand and recover from difficult situations, and it's a quality that's essential for achieving success in any area of life. When it comes to fitness, resilience is what drives us to push through the pain, to keep going even when we feel like giving up, and to overcome the obstacles that stand in our way.
I want to share with you some stories of fitness heroes who embody the spirit of resilience. There's the runner who suffered a devastating injury, but refused to give up and went on to complete a marathon. There's the cyclist who was diagnosed with a chronic illness, but continued to ride and inspire others with his determination. And there's the swimmer who overcame a fear of water to become a competitive athlete.
These individuals are the epitome of resilience, and they remind us that we all have the capacity to overcome challenges and achieve greatness. As the famous quote goes, "Fall seven times, stand up eight." It's not about being perfect; it's about being persistent and refusing to give up.
So, how can we cultivate resilience in our own lives? Here are a few tips:
1. *Focus on progress, not perfection*: Instead of striving for perfection, focus on making progress and celebrating small wins along the way.
2. *Develop a growth mindset*: Believe that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through hard work and dedication.
3. *Build a support network*: Surround yourself with people who encourage and support you, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
4. *Practice self-care*: Take care of your physical, emotional, and mental well-being, and prioritize activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
In conclusion, I want to leave you with a challenge today. Let's focus on building our resilience and celebrating the unbreakable spirit of fitness heroes who inspire us with their courage and determination. Let's Get UP, Get OUT, and Get ACTIVE, not just for ourselves, but for the people around us who need our support and encouragement.
Remember, resilience is not just about overcoming challenges; it's about growing and learning from our experiences. So, let's embrace the journey, and let's celebrate the triumphs and setbacks that make us stronger and more resilient.
Have a great and blessed day!
Best regards,
Danie F. Van Aswegen

_The Real Champions: Celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Fitness_
In life, we often celebrate the fastest, the strongest, and those who achieve outstanding performances. When it comes to running, jogging, or walking, we tend to focus on the success stories as inspirational. However, it's only when we experience a setback or a traumatic event that we begin to see life and people in a different light.
Last week, I had a personal experience that made me realize the importance of empathy and appreciation for those who push through challenges to achieve their goals. I fell, hurt both my hips and lower back, and every step or movement is filled with discomfort. As I navigated this new reality, I gained a deeper understanding of the daily struggles that many people face.
I began to think about the individuals who show up at group walks, runs, Time Trials, or parkruns, despite suffering from tremendous pain in their feet, ankles, knees, legs, hips, or back. I thought about the MS Survivor, a courageous fighter, who joins us regularly at parkrun, always in constant pain, yet always kind and willing to chat. I thought about the girl who desperately wants to lose weight, but still shows up every week with enthusiasm. I thought about the gentleman who struggles with his knees, but continues to push through the pain. I thought about the friend who has grown accustomed to back problems, but still walks and pushes himself to be better.
And then there are those who face even greater challenges. The gentleman with one leg, who completed a parkrun on his crutches, is a shining example of determination and courage. The young girl diagnosed with cancer, whose family finds comfort in parkrun events, is a beacon of hope and resilience. The lady who lost her husband, or the family who lost a child, who find a sense of belonging at parkrun, are a testament to the power of community and support.
These individuals are the _REAL CHAMPIONS_. They are the ones who inspire me to encourage more people to Get UP, Get OUT, and Get ACTIVE! They remind us that it's not about competing with others, but about pushing ourselves to be the very best we can be.
As David Goggins so eloquently puts it, "When you feel like giving up and can't go on, you've only reached 40% of what you're capable of." This means that most of the time, when we give up, it's mentally, not physically. We have the capacity to push through challenges and achieve greatness, but it requires mental toughness and determination.
So, let's celebrate one another. Let's celebrate the gift of life that each one of us has received. Let's recognize that every person has a unique story, with their own struggles and triumphs. Let's support and encourage each other to be the best version of ourselves.
In conclusion, I want to leave you with a challenge today. Let's focus on being our best selves, rather than comparing ourselves to others. Let's celebrate the unseen heroes of fitness, who push through challenges and inspire us with their courage and determination. Let's Get UP, Get OUT, and Get ACTIVE, not just for ourselves, but for the people around us who need our support and encouragement.
Have a great and blessed day!

From Adversity to Triumph: Oom Peet Fourie's Inspiring Journey
How parkrun and determination helped him overcome health challenges and achieve remarkable success at 80+ years young!
As we continue to celebrate the remarkable story of Oom Peet Fourie, we are reminded that his journey is even more extraordinary considering the challenges he has faced. Despite struggling with lung issues from the late 1970s and being diagnosed with emphysema, Oom Peet has shown remarkable resilience and determination. Furthermore, his courageous battle against colon cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2006, is a testament to his unwavering spirit.

Since starting parkruns in 2016, Oom Peet has experienced a notable improvement in his health and lung function. This is a powerful reminder of the positive impact that regular exercise and a supportive community can have on our overall well-being.
In an emotional reflection, Oom Peet expresses his heartfelt gratitude to his son, Petrus, for introducing him to parkrun. Oom Peet's appreciation for parkrun is evident in his words, "parkrun has made me a better and different person to get up with a purpose, to go running one more time." His advice to potential parkrunners is simple yet profound: "Just Do It and Enjoy It!" This mindset has enabled him to achieve remarkable success, including:
- 1955 Free State Wrestling Champion at the age of 16
- Completed 293 parkruns
- Completed 135 different parkrun across South Africa
- Volunteered 59 times at various parkrun at 11 different locations

Some of Oom Peet's notable personal bests include:
- parkrun: 31:05

In addition to his running achievements, Oom Peet is also an avid recreational cyclist at the age of 85. Despite facing a setback in 2023, when he injured his left knee at a parkrun event in Witbank, Oom Peet remains enthusiastic and passionate about his running. His personal goal of running a parkrun under 31 minutes continues to drive him, and we have no doubt that he will achieve this feat.
As we look to 2025, we hope that it will be a year filled with many more milestones, personal achievements, Gold Medals, and New PB's for Oom Peet. His story is a shining example of what can be achieved with determination, hard work, and a willingness to try something new. We are grateful to have Oom Peet as an inspiration to us all in the Vaal, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for this remarkable individual.
Life Lessons from Oom Peet's Story:
1. Resilience and determination can overcome adversity: Oom Peet's journey is a testament to the human spirit's ability to persevere in the face of challenges.
2. The power of community and support: Oom Peet's experience with parkrun demonstrates the positive impact that a supportive community can have on our lives.
3. It's never too late to start something new: Oom Peet's story shows that we can start anew and achieve greatness at any stage of our lives.
4. Gratitude and appreciation are essential: Oom Peet's heartfelt gratitude to his son and parkrun is a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and appreciating the people and experiences that enrich our lives.

These achievements demonstrate Heather's commitment to her sport and her ability to excel at a wide range of distances and events. Her dedication and passion for running are an inspiration to others, and her impressive list of achievements is a testament to her hard work and perseverance.
Life-Lessons from Heather's Running Journey
Heather's journey teaches us several valuable life-lessons that can be applied to our own lives:
1. Consistency is key: Heather's consistent training and participation in running events have helped her achieve her goals and maintain her fitness level.
2. Adaptability is essential: Heather's ability to adapt to changing circumstances, such as having children and shifting her focus from competitive running to parkrun, has allowed her to continue pursuing her passion for running.
3. Community is vital: Heather's involvement in parkrun has shown her the importance of community and camaraderie in staying motivated and achieving her goals.
4. Perseverance pays off: Heather's numerous achievements are a testament to her perseverance and dedication to her craft.
5. t's never too late to start: Heather's journey shows that it's never too late to start or restart our fitness journey, and that parkrun provides a welcoming and supportive community for people of all ages and abilities.
6. Finding joy in the journey: Heather's love for running and her enthusiasm for parkrun demonstrate the importance of finding joy in the journey, rather than just focusing on the end goal.
7. The power of volunteering: Heather's experience volunteering at parkrun highlights the value of giving back to the community and helping others achieve their goals.
8. Embracing new challenges: Heather's willingness to try new things, such as parkrun, and to take on new challenges, such as volunteering, shows that it's never too late to try something new and that it can lead to new experiences and opportunities.
Discovering parkrun and a New Sense of Community
However, after having children, Heather's focus shifted from competitive running to spending time with her family. It was during this time that Heather discovered parkrun, a safe and social environment where she could run with her children. She started volunteering at her local parkrun, Heron Banks, and soon became hooked on the community and the challenges that came with it.
"parkrun keeps me motivated to maintain my fitness, and although I don't per se chase PB's much, I still try to remain within my own targets," Heather says. "It's my Saturday happy space, being social with people keen to enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment, and at the same time, I'm getting some exercise which I believe is vital for us all."
The Power of Community and Camaraderie
But what really draws Heather to parkrun is the sense of community and camaraderie that comes with it. "parkrun has become my Saturday happy space," she says. "Besides just clocking another run, my reasons to participate are numerous: Originally it was just to support the concept – by participating and/or volunteering, it contributed to keeping an event open for others to participate in and helping them build on their fitness journey. But nowadays it is my social run and outing – I see familiar faces and friends, it has motivated me to be active when I wasn’t always in the mood but felt I should do something, it offered me a safe environment to run in, it has shared my love for running with others who have now gone on to being ‘real’ runners and it has introduced me to new people (my parkrun friends & family)."
Exploring New Places and Meeting New Peopl
Heather also loves the opportunity to explore new places and meet new people through parkrun. "A most enjoyable aspect for me is the opportunity to join others in places where I might never have gone to in the past," she says. "Through volunteering I make an effort to interact with fellow participants, and I love listening & sharing parkrun stories."
A Local Parkrun with a Special Place in Her Heart
Heather's local parkrun, Sasolburg Stadium parkrun, holds a special place in her heart. "Sasolburg Stadium parkrun is close to my heart as I grew up in Sasolburg and still reside here on the outskirts," she says. "From the early events, it is very encouraging to see how the parkrun has grown locally and to see the progress made by participants. The parkrun spirit is very much alive at the Sasolburg Stadium parkrun, and this vibe is created by a very dedicated team of volunteers – many who hardly ever participate in the actual event."
A Reminder that it's Never Too Late to Start
Heather's journey is a reminder that it's never too late to start or restart our fitness journey. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just starting out, parkrun provides a welcoming and supportive community that can help you achieve your goals.
_"Just give it a try – once – and then make a decision,"_ - Heather Kappmeier

Reflections on parkrun in the Vaal: A Year of Connection, Growth, and Community
As we bid farewell to 2024, I am filled with gratitude and joy as I reflect on the incredible impact parkrun has had on our community in the Vaal. For many, parkrun has become an integral part of their weekly routine, a sacred space where friendships are forged, challenges are overcome, and memories are created. As one of our passionate and loyal parkrunners so aptly put it, "Get UP, Get OUT & Get ACTIVE, and discover that parkrun is not just a run, but a vibrant community, a supportive family, and a way of life that ignites a movement of health, happiness, and wellbeing, empowering you to live life to the fullest, one step at a time!"
Throughout the year, I had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of parkrun. I saw individuals from all walks of life come together, united by a shared passion for running, walking, and community. I saw strangers become friends, and friends become family. For some, parkrun has been a journey of self-discovery and growth. It has provided a platform to challenge themselves, push beyond their comfort zones, and achieve milestones they never thought possible. I've seen people conquer their fears, build confidence, and develop a sense of resilience that extends far beyond the parkrun course.
For others, parkrun has been a source of comfort, solace, and support. It has provided a safe space to process emotions, work through challenges, and find a sense of belonging. As one of our proud parkrun participants noted, "Parkrun has become my Saturday happy space, a place where I've found a sense of community and belonging, and where I've discovered that the joy of running is not just about the finish line, but about the people you meet and the stories you share along the way." This sense of community and connection is at the heart of what makes parkrun so special, and it's something that we're grateful to see thriving in our community.
As I look back on the year, I am reminded of the countless stories of impact, inspiration, and triumph that have emerged from our parkrun community. I am reminded of the early morning sunrise runs, the laughter, the tears, and the countless moments of connection that have made parkrun in the Vaal so special. As we look to the future, I am excited to see what 2025 holds for our parkrun community. I am excited to welcome new faces, to celebrate new milestones, and to continue building a community that is founded on the values of inclusivity, support, and connection.
As one of our grateful parkrun participants so eloquently put it, "Parkrun is so much more than just a run, it's a community that welcomes you with open arms, where you can build confidence, combat loneliness, and find a sense of purpose, all while improving your physical and mental well-being - it's a truly life-changing experience." This is the essence of parkrun, and it's something that we're committed to nurturing and growing in the years to come.
In his own words, the Sasolburg Stadium parkrun Event Director expressed his gratitude by extending a word of thanks, "To everyone who has been a part of our parkrun journey in Vaal during 2024, I offer my deepest gratitude. Thank you for being part of this incredible community. Thank you for sharing your stories, your laughter, and your tears with us. And thank you for helping to create a space that is truly special – a space where everyone feels welcome, valued, and connected."
